Chala Hunter

Chala Hunter est une metteuse en scène, autrice et actrice bilingue, diplômée de l’École nationale de théâtre du Canada. Résidente de Tkaronto, elle est originaire du territoire du Traité 6, proche de Saskatoon, dans la région de Saskatchewan, patrie des Métis et bien d’autres peuples et nations. Elle a joué dans divers théâtres du Canada, ce qui lui a valu des nominations pour des prix Dora et META.

Son premier court métrage, Moon Dog, avec en vedette Martha Burns, a été présenté au Canadian Film Festival et au National Screen Institute Online Film Fest. Ella a réalisé P!GS, écrit par Khadijah Roberts Abdullah et Carly McIssaac, présenté pour la première fois au Caribbean Tales International Film Festival. Ce film est maintenant disponible sur CBC Gem. Sa plus récente réalisation, Pony, est en postproduction et verra bientôt le jour.

Elle a été l’assistante du producteur et scénariste Adam Pettle pendant deux saisons de Nurses (Global) et de Burden of Truth (CBC). Elle travaille actuellement avec April Mullen et l’assiste sur de nombreux projets. Elle écrit présentement son premier long métrage, avec le soutien du Conseil des arts du Canada, sur le sujet de la normalisation généralisée des microviolences dans le colonialisme patriarcal. Elle travaille aussi avec Amy Keating sur une série, Little Animals, qui raconte l’histoire de deux nettoyeurs de cadavres d’animaux happés sur les routes, qui tentent de survivre à une apocalypse qui frappe Toronto.

Chala Hunter (she/her) is a bilingual director, writer, actor and graduate of the National Theatre School. Currently based in Tkaronto, she is originally from Treaty 6 territory, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, homeland of the Métis and many other nations + peoples. She has performed in theatres across Canada, and has been nominated for both a Dora and a Meta for her work onstage.

Her first short, Moon Dog, starring Martha Burns, screened at The Canadian Film Festival as well as the National Screen Institute’s Online Film Fest. P!GS, a film she directed, written by Khadijah Roberts Abdullah and Carly McIssaac, premiered at the Caribbean Tales International Film Festival and is now available on CBC Gem. Her most recent short, Pony, is in post and coming into the world soon.

She was the assistant to Showrunner Adam Pettle for two seasons of Nurses (Global) and Burden of Truth (CBC), and is currently working with April Mullen, as her assistant on multiple projects. She is also writing her first feature, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, on the subject of the pervasive normalization of micro-violence in the colonial patriarchy. She’s developing a series with co-creator Amy Keating, Little Animals, about two roadkill clean up workers trying to survive the apocalypse in Toronto.
